For children who grow up surrounded by fear and trauma, our Summer Camps can seem like a piece of heaven on earth.
Matei and his family live in desperate poverty in Moldova. This means that, even at 12-years old, he carries heavy responsibilities. His life is rarely free from work – whether it’s feeding animals, weeding crops, carrying water from the well or making the fire. His childhood is slipping away all too quickly. Summer Camp is an island of joy for Matei; a place where he can leave worries behind and simply be a child. And he can’t wait to go again.

Matei’s favourite moments at camp included the lively morning gymnastics, worship in the camp chapel, where he learned about God, the delicious food, and all the excitement of sports competitions.
Moments like this made him feel truly seen and celebrated. He will never forget this time at camp and made a special bond with one of the coordinators, Petru, laughing, “He never shouts at me!”
At camp young people like Matei can find rest, laugh, play new games and enjoy an atmosphere of friendship and fun. The hardest moment is always the day of departure, because a piece of their hearts remains at camp.
Beyond all the fun and friendship, the Mission aims to plant seeds of faith and pray that they will flourish and grow. And, indeed, experience had shown us that the greatest and most positive impact we see in young people occurs because we teach them that God loves them and welcomes them with open arms.
